The Preakness Celebration Hot Air Balloon Festival was held at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, MD. The multi-day spectacle offered a variety of food and entertainment. Children’s activities included basketball free throws, bean bag throws, and face painting. They could even romp inside a balloon that had been laid on its side and inflated via large fans. Food was everywhere throughout the festival and included my favorite, ice cream. The festival centerpiece was of course the hot air balloons. For a few dollars, you could climb in to a basket for a tethered ride. The balloon floated a few hundred feet off the ground but remained anchored via ropes. A more expensive option enabled you a completely un-tethered experience, soaring silently among the clouds. Thursday and Friday evenings were capped with a balloon glow. Multiple balloons were anchored on the ground. Pilots fired bursts from their burners, setting the balloons aglow against the evening sky.
