This image shows a portion of the 227 foot tall cast iron dome. Designed by 22 year old architect, Baltimore City Hall was built 1867-1875. The building incorporates characteristics of Second Empire architecture such as ornamentation, mansard roof, and, shown here, a central tower with clock. Second Empire architecture became popular after the American Civil War. This style of architecture was influenced by French Renaissance styles, which in turn were influenced by Imperial Roman styles that stressed rich, opulent, and detailed design.
