Carl was an AMAZING photographer to work with. We had a somewhat unusual request (to get school pictures done for our students). The unusual part is that we run an organization that works with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Part of having the ASD diagnosis is having communication deficits, sensory overload, social deficits, and behavior problems. It was definitely not an easy task and required a lot of patience to make sure our students understood what was expected of them, to wait for the perfect moment, to get them to smile or laugh, and most importantly, to make them feel comfortable with the environment. Carl was able to do it all. Our families were able to get their children photographed (and in some instances with their siblings), for the first time. It was an amazing accomplishment and the pictures were ADORABLE. Thank you Carl for all of your hard work. We can’t wait to do it all again!

Also, this allowed me to be prepared to have photos taken in a couple of different outfits without the awkwardness of changing clothes in a strange place. Carl immediately set me at ease with his professionalism and easy-going manner. He was set up and ready to shoot in no time and we quickly had many options from which to choose. He made the process fun, when it could easily have been uncomfortable – holding your head this way or that, leaning in, smiling, etc. He sent some options to me electronically just days after the shoot and I paid only when I was happy with my selection. He made the whole process fun by sharing ways to make sure my smile and warmth came through in the shots.
With COVID, I felt compelled more than ever to update my headshot. Carl provided a COVID safe environment that made me feel comfortable, but he also was willing to travel. I debated that option originally because it’s tough to be on-time with a toddler! In the end I traveled to him which was just as simple and easy.
When I need to update my headshot in a few years (I won’t be waiting 7+ years to do it again!), I will be reaching back out to Carl. Highly recommend him as a professional but even more as a good person who wants you to look your best but also like you!

It was such a pleasure working with Carl at Federal Hills Photography! We had a relatively large event planned for up to 350 people including very high-profile speakers and keynote. There was a lot involved and Carl was extremely professional, flexible, kind, and helpful throughout the process. We had great communication prior to the event and Carl set expectations very well. If we had any hiccups or change of plans (as large events often do) Carl adapted quickly with a great attitude. After the event he made sure to stay behind to check in and confirm what the next steps would be. It took barely 1 week to get all of the edited images back and they looked amazing! I cannot recommend Federal Hills Photography enough and I definitely know we look forward to working with them again!

Carl provided me with a professional headshot for my LinkedIn profile and did an outstanding job! This was the first time I’d ever done something like this, so I was a little unsure what to expect. However, I ended up having a great experience! Carl was very friendly and professional, and walked me through every step of the process (he considers each shoot a “collaboration” with his client, which helped make things feel more fun and relaxed). Over a 30-45 minute session, we took several pictures, with him explaining what he was changing and why each time. From there, he gave advice and recommendations that helped us narrow it down to the one we ultimately chose, which I am very happy with. I would work with him again in a heartbeat, and absolutely recommend him if you’re looking for a professional headshot!

Carl walks you through everything so patiently and gives instructions clearly and helpfully (and so nicely that they come across as suggestions informed by years of experience vs. commands). He never once made me feel like a freak or a robot who’s just lately gained the capacity for human emotion. He’s a funny, funny guy, too. He made the unbearable process of a headshot (I’ve had many) not unbearable at all.
Oh, and the photo is terrific as well. Carl’s a gem.

There is both symmetry and variation in the photo, and the black and white is saturated perfectly in the print. I look at it every day and still love it. Other pieces by local artists started over the mantle but have been placed elsewhere since then. Only this photo has remained over these several years.
