There was a lot involved and Carl was extremely professional, flexible, kind, and helpful throughout the process. We had great communication prior to the event and Carl set expectations very well. If we had any hiccups or change of plans (as large events often do) Carl adapted quickly with a great attitude. After the event he made sure to stay behind to check in and confirm what the next steps would be. It took barely 1 week to get all of the edited images back and they looked amazing! I cannot recommend Federal Hills Photography enough and I definitely know we look forward to working with them again!

Carl walks you through everything so patiently and gives instructions clearly and helpfully (and so nicely that they come across as suggestions informed by years of experience vs. commands). He never once made me feel like a freak or a robot who’s just lately gained the capacity for human emotion. He’s a funny, funny guy, too. He made the unbearable process of a headshot (I’ve had many) not unbearable at all.

With COVID, I felt compelled more than ever to update my headshot. Carl provided a COVID safe environment that made me feel comfortable, but he also was willing to travel. Carl was very friendly and professional, and walked me through every step of the process (he considers each shoot a “collaboration” with his client, which helped make things feel more fun and relaxed). Over a 30-45 minute session, we took several pictures, with him explaining what he was changing and why each time. From there, he gave advice and recommendations that helped us narrow it down to the one we ultimately chose, which I am very happy with. Carl was an AMAZING photographer to work with. We had a somewhat unusual request (to get school pictures done for our students). The unusual part is that we run an organization that works with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Part of having the ASD diagnosis is having communication deficits, sensory overload, social deficits, and behavior problems. It was definitely not an easy task and required a lot of patience to make sure our students understood what was expected of them, to wait for the perfect moment, to get them to smile or laugh, and most importantly, to make them feel comfortable with the environment. Carl was able to do it all. Our families were able to get their children photographed (and in some instances with their siblings), for the first time. It was an amazing accomplishment and the pictures were ADORABLE. Thank you Carl for all of your hard work. We can’t wait to do it all again!

How do I prepare for my headshot session?
These are general guidelines that provide a good starting point for preparation. If the session requires, I'll provide additional prep guidance:
- When selecting attire, dress for the audience for which you want to make your best first impression.
- If you have preferred hair styling tools and products, bring them with you for touch ups.
- Don’t wear any more makeup or jewelry than you normally would. Avoid makeup that adds a shine to your face.
- Solid colors are best and avoid busy patterns.
- Iron clothes and run a lint roller over them. Pay particular attention to neckline and shoulders.
- Drink lots of water and get a good night sleep.
What can I expect during my headshot session?
My goals with every headshot session are to ensure a client is informed, comfortable, and confident. We'll begin by making sure you appearance is ready to go and answering any last minute questions you have. For certain sessions, I'll have your choice of music playing to help you get into the flow of the shoot. During the shoot, I’ll provide guidance on facial expression, posture, and other aspects of posing.
Where can I have a headshot session?
- Option 1: You travel to my studio space at The Broom Factory: 3500 Boston St, Baltimore, MD 21224. This option is convenient if you don't have an office, you do have an office but don't want to tie up a space all day, or need an indoor alternative to avoid poor weather.
- Option 2: I travel to you. This option minimizes disruption to your day by reducing your travel. I can produce indoor or outdoor headshots at your office or other public location. I don't photograph inside residences.
