‘Short and sweet’ (Silene caroliniana) Group

‘Short and sweet’ is a cultivar of silene caroliniana, a perennial plant native to the eastern United States. Silene caroliniana grows in a short mound and produce up to 100 flowers per plant. This image shows the stamens just beginning to emerge; one is coated with pollen. The petals are slim with significant space between them. Silene caroliniana is sometimes called sticky catchfly, because the calyx contains sticky hairs that resemble flypaper. Their actual purpose is to prevent ants from accessing the flowers and associated nectar.
