Blue morpho (Morpho peleides) butterfly

A Morpho peleides, or blue morpho butterfly, rests on a tree at Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, Maryland. The large spots, which resemble eyes, are thought to be a form of automimicry. They may be used to scare a predator away or draw a predator away from the more vulnerable parts of the butterfly.
