Rudder and stern of Captain John Smith’s shallop

The rudder and part of the keel of a shallop, a small boat used by John Smith to explore the Chesapeake. The rudder is to the right of the frame and the keel is to the left. The rudder pivots on the metal rod that extends vertically to the right of the frame. I deliberately composed this close up to emphasize the textures and vibrant colors of the decomposing materials.
