Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), Baltimore, Maryland

Wild columbine is a perennial plant native to eastern and central North America. Columbine produce distinctive, brightly colored flowers. Flowers bloom facing downwards, gradually rotate upwards, and eventually fall off and expose seed pods. According to the USDA Plant Guide, seeds from wild columbine have been used to treat a variety of ailments including headache and fever and used in perfume.
