Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum)

Star of Bethlehem is a perennial plant native to southern Africa, western Asia, and Europe. The flowers open during the day and close in the evening. Like the bulbous buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus), star of Bethlehem has an underground bulb that it uses to store nutrients for surviving the winter. In this image, six stamens surround the central green fruit capsule that contains seeds. A single pistil is visible extending from the center of the capsule.
